Sodzerz Defense Systems (SDS) is a large vargr corporation operating along the
Imperial border sectors of the Extents: Provence, Windhorn, and Meshan. While
they conducted some research of their own, a substantial portion of their
business came from reverse engineering the more popular Imperial weapons that
they could get their paws on.
The LR63011 is a lower tech knockoff of Instellarms popular
X1102D laser rifle. As the average tech
level in the Extents is a couple notches lower than the Imperium, it was
incumbent upon SDS to design a weapon that could be manufactured on a host of
worlds. [TNE Note: One such world, Igodosakfell, survived the Collapse with the
foundation of its manufacturing facilities intact.]
While a laser rifle constructed at TL-11 will certainly fall short of one made
at TL-13, the LR63011 is still a capable weapon. It will inflict damage on
unarmored objects, but its lack of penetration presents no danger to moderately
protected targets.
Inferior materials forced the barrel diameter down from 8 cm to 6 cm, but the
weapon retains the same weight. However, the 100-shot power pack is five
kilograms heavier. For those looking to avoid the added encumbrance, there is a
40-shot version that is 2.5 kg lighter that is sold as an optimization of shot
capacity versus weight.
To help make the weapon more appealing despite its shortcomings, it is sold at
a much lower price point than the X1102D. The savings comes through the use of
optic sights instead of the overly expensive electronic sights. The improved
range of the weapon (7%) is typically over-hyped.
Like the X1102D, the weapon is suited for paramilitary deployment, particularly
those involved in crowd pacification operations where masses of unarmored
targets are common. Forces involved in such operations have been known to equip
the weapon with an under barrel mount, allowing for the addition of a Gauss
weapon or grenade launcher, thus providing armor penetration should the
situation call for it.
The weapon is hardened to "melee" standard, to survive both in the Wilds and on
the riot line. The proliferation of the weapon through the Extents has spawned
several imitators of its own, though most are of inferior quality. There is also
a sizable trade in after market parts and accessories which SDS participates
in. These range from bayonets to dedicated grenade launchers and gauss weapons.
There are also software additions to the power modulators/management systems
for the power packs.
