System: Jumpspace between Gemid and Newcastle
Twelve hours since jump. Everyone's had a chance to grab some shuteye and some
food. The captain has called a meeting to explain what happened during the
meeting on Gemid and what's to come.
Gvarokh says, "When we went to pick up the weapon, we were greeted by armed
guards and lab techs in environmental suits. Our contact attended the meeting
via holo and basically altered the deal, catching us and Soks by surprise. It
should be noted that Soks was quite upset. Although we were the ones that got
screwed, Soks looked like he felt betrayed, too." Gvarokh looks to Elloe for
confirmation. She nods her head.
"When confronted with the choice to accept or reject the mission, I pretty much
assumed we'd be dead if we didn't take it. Gegatsueg, who was one of the
committee members, openly admitted upon Soks' questioning that had one of the
other factions been chosen, they would've been killed after completing the job
to cover up their involvement. The fact that he came outright and said this
meant to me that we were similarly expendable. He tried to pass some bs story
about having us be an ally in Corridor, but I'm not buying it.
"At this point, I realized that we knew too much. If we didn't take the job, I
believe that we'd have been killed outright on the spot, and then they would've
come for the rest of you. So obviously, I agreed to the change in terms. I did
ask for an additional sample, and surprisingly, they agreed. I'll get to that
in a moment.
"The 'change in terms' is that, as Elloe surmised, we are to go kill Ngath. Yes,
the guy that this confederation is named after. They want us to use the weapon
to kill Ngath and as many additional bystanders as possible. They want as big of
an atrocity as possible. Some political bs about Ngath going soft. To get
there, we're going to be guided every step of the way. Those four frigates you
saw are our escorts. I don't know if they'll be with us the whole way or if
there will be some kind of handoff, but I suspect that there won't be a decrease
in the strength of said escort. So branching off to do a side trip isn't going
to be possible unless we're dumping the deal and running for it. If we fail to
show up at any step of the process, they'll be hunting us down and not to
capture us. So no side trips for computer supplies or extra nukes. Assuming we
succeed, they'll then guide us back to Gemid. At which point, we've been
promised to be granted our actual delivery and then escorted back to Corridor,
where our fake background says we're from. Even in the best case, they don't
want us in the Confederation anymore.
"And no, I don't believe them."
Gvarokh turns to Elloekothe and says, "I still don't understand why Gegatsueg
admitted to Soks that they were basically going to kill the other two had they
won, yet expect me to believe he won't do the same to us."
She thinks about her reply a moment, then says, "Maybe Gegatsueg thought that he
was flattering you. Some people have egos that are susceptible to that sort of
thing. I know that Khigiikuli did. I don't know enough about Dhoknan, but plenty
of corsairs, human or vargr, are always looking to look appear as charismatic
as possible. So if someone comes along that puts down a corsair's rivals as
fools, that makes them feel better about themselves. It makes it easier for them
to hold their snouts up high and feel superior. It's false charisma, but they
fall for it. The smart ones don't fall for it, which is why they last longer and
becomes wolves to be reckoned with. Clearly, Gegatsueg underestimated you."
"Then I guess I am playing my role well enough. Honestly, that didn't even occur
to me. All I could think was, 'Do you think I am an idiot?' Apparently, the
answer is that he did think I am an idiot."
Gvarokh continues, "So, getting back to the sample I asked for... I told
Gegatsueg that it was a backup in case the main weapon attack misses. I really
wanted the sample so Irma can finally start to play with it. It has a 24 or
48-hour lock on the package, after which it should be freely accessible." He
turns to Irma. "Please set up whatever containment you need and immediately get
to work. We have at least six weeks to get to the target, obviously longer with
refueling operations, so please use those weeks to find an antidote or some way
to negate it."
"Will do," Irma replies.
Gvarokh addresses the group again. "So with all that background, here's where we
are. We're going to have to follow our proscribed course to the target. If we
need some kind of supplies on the stops along the way, we'll either have to be
fast or somehow justify why we need to get it. Regardless, just following the
path is kind of necessary to give Irma time to do her work. But before we get
there, we have to decide what we're going to do. I see three broad approaches we
can choose from:

Pack of Daggers emerges from jumpspace. Soon after, sensors pick up two
of the frigates. They escort the ship down the gravity well so that it can
refuel. About an hour after emerging from jumpspace, the other two frigates
emerge from jumpspace. They don't descend into the gas giant's gravity well.
Instead, they stand guard at safe jump distance.
The ship descends into the gravity well without incident and skimming goes
smoothly. The two escort frigates are there waiting when Pack of Daggers
emerges. All three ships climb out of the gravity well. Apparently the frigates,
with enough fuel remaining for another two-parsec jump, have opted to refuel
later instead of now.
The next coordinates are transmitted to Pack of Daggers. Apparently, the
ship is to travel to the Ikhog system and refuel at Sitka, the middle of the
system's three gas giants.
Once all five ships are at safe jump distance, the order is given to jump.

Pack of Daggers emerges from jump. Three of the frigates exited jumpspace
before Pack of Daggers. The fourth pops in a half hour later.
Inbound velocity is 450,000 mph (750,000 kph). Captain Tsuengsaekh had insisted
on giving your fuel purification plant the six hours it needed to refine the
fuel for jump—he didn't want any surprise misjumps. So Pack of
Daggers just cruised at about 1G out of Hurn's gravity well. With 1.8
million miles to go, the order to decelerate isn't given just yet.
With 675,000 miles to go, the order to decelerate at 3G is given. It should take 115 minutes at that decel rate to wipe out the inbound vector. It'll also mean there will still be 250,000 miles to go, so Gvarokh expects Captain Tsuengsaekh will order the decel burns to be put on pause.
The order to pause comes a bit early. Pack of Daggers is 570,000 miles
out with an inbound velocity of 393,000 mph. The reason why becomes evident with
the interference from the thrusters eliminated.
Passive sensors pick up eleven ships around 70° latitude of the gas giant's
northern hemisphere. No transponders, of course.
A comm call from Captain Tsuengsaekh comes in. "Friends of yours?"
Gvarokh isn't sure if he's serious or not, and so responds, "No, they're not.
Given Ikhog's reputation as a supporter for the corsair life, it could be
anyone."
Captain Tsuengsaekh grunts and ends the call. He then broadcasts, "Attention
unidentified ships, this is Captain Tsuengsaekh of the Confederation Naval
Starship Zoegzuenguegh. Stay clear of the southern hemisphere of the gas
giant. We will be refueling there. Failure to comply will be considered
interference with Confederation Navy operations, a felony punishable by fines,
seizure of assets, and possible imprisonment."
Half a minute goes by before a response is received. "Acknowledged
Zoegzuenguegh."
Captain Tsuengsaekh laser comms Pack of Daggers and the rest of the
frigates, "Sending course change." The new course puts the ships on target for
about 60° south latitude on the gas giant.
Decel burn resumes.
With the change in approach, the passive sensors are able to compensate for the
profound signal noise coming off the engines. More ships have emerged from the
gas giant, bringing the total to fourteen.
Once again, Captain Tsuengsaekh gives the order to pause the decel burn. The gas
giant is just 197,000 miles away and inbound velocity is 157,000 mph. The
reason for the pause this time probably has something to do with the fact that
the now fourteen ships are moving south on an apparent intercept course.
Captain Tsuengsaekh's irritation is evident in his voice. "Attention
unidentified ships. Change course immediately. You're in direct violation of my
orders to stay away from the southern hemisphere."
A different voice replies. Although he's speaking Gvegh, his human accent is
unmistakable. "Afraid I can't do that, Captain. You're escorting the dogs who
are directly responsible for the destruction of the Touzagh base on Ikhog. We're
here to bring them to justice."
Elloekothe's ears shoot up. External comms are off, so she's free to exclaim,
"Khigiikuli! He must have an informant or a sympathizer in Gegatsueg's
organization."
Gvarokh responds, "There is probably an informant on one of these four ships."
"Negative," Captain Tsuengsaekh replies. "The Touzagh, or anyone claiming to be
working on their behalf, have no jurisdiction in this matter. This is a
Confederation Navy operation. You will stand down and change course immediately.
This is your last warning."
"And this is yours. Walk away now, and I'll spare your lives."
Captain Tsuengsaekh responds by lighting up his active sensors and sharing data
telemetry with Pack of Daggers. Fourteen enemy ships: four
Buccaneer class corsairs (440 tons, 3G), two Aeogz class corsairs
(400 tons, 5G), two Sorrgheg class reavers (500 tons, 6G), two
Rrazaghz class corsairs (400 tons, 5G), and four Ueknou class
corsairs (400 tons, 3G).
Captain Tsuengsaekh tight-beams Pack of Daggers. "We're outgunned, and
we don't have enough fuel for an emergency jump. I know it's risky, but we're
going to ride our current speed right down the well. Should take a little over
an hour. If we're in decent shape, we'll decel at the last minute to take the
strain off of atmo braking. We refuel and re-surface at these coordinates and
time," he transmits the info. "I suggest you do the same. Good hunting,
Captain."
After the line is cut, Gvarokh announces shipwide, "Battle stations! Vincent
and Simrii to the plasma turrets and Dougok and Uengghae to the laser turrets.
Chuck to the bridge. Lakir and Vlad, make sure our package is secure in the
hold. And anyone who isn't in combat armor better get to it fast."

The shooting begins.
The two squadrons are roughly 153,000 miles apart, making for a formidable shot.
Still, both sides hope for some lucky shots.
The frigates each have six pulse laser turrets and two missile turrets. In the
opening round they just fire their lasers. They concentrate their fire on one of
the Sorrgheg class reavers. It's hit twice. One of the hits even
incapacitates a turret. Pack of Daggers does likewise, but none of its
gunners hit.
Captain Tsuengsaekh instructs the squadron to conduct a ten-minute 3G decel burn
to cut down on the squadron's velocity.
Khigiikuli's squadron follows a similar firing tactic, aiming for the lead
frigate. Two laser shots hit it amidship, but don't appear to have hit anything
vital.
The two squadrons are roughly 133,750 miles apart, which is still a formidable
shot. Pack of Daggers' squadron is down to an inbound velocity of 118,000
mph with 135,750 miles to Sitka's atmosphere.
Neither the frigates nor the Pack of Daggers score any hits. The corsairs
have better luck, striking the lead frigate twice. One shot it just forward of
the second row of turrets. The other was further aft, likely engineering. The
ship's performance seems unaffected.
The two squadrons are roughly 105,000 miles apart, just outside of a difficult
shot. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 116,250 miles to Sitka's atmosphere.
One of the frigates scores a hit on the already damaged Sorrgheg class
reaver. The hit dings it right on the nose. Pack of Daggers' gunners all
miss.
The damaged Sorrgheg class reaver doesn't fire this round. There's
speculation that its sensor array may have been damaged, thus preventing
accurate targeting.
In a match of blows, the lead frigate takes another hit midships.
Captain Tsuengsaekh instructs the squadron to conduct another ten-minute 3G
decel burn to cut down on the squadron's velocity.
The two squadrons are roughly 83,000 miles apart, now only a difficult shot.
Pack of Daggers' squadron is down to an inbound velocity of 78,545 mph
with 100,000 miles to Sitka's atmosphere.
To Pack of Daggers' surprise, all four frigates fire a volley of
missiles. But after a minute burn, their thrusters shut off, thus making them
difficult to detect and track amidst the simultaneous laser fire.
The damaged Sorrgheg class reaver is struck five times by frigate laser
fire. A couple of fuel modules are seen to rupture, two strike amidship but miss
the turrets, and the maneuver drive takes a hit.
Strikes from Pack of Daggers are more successful this time around with
Vincent, Simrii, and Dougok landing blows. Dougok appears to have ruptured a
third fuel module. Vincent struck amidship while Simrii appears to have hit
engineering.
The damaged Sorrgheg must not have repaired its sensors yet as it still
isn't firing, but the other ships are making up for it, striking the lead
frigate twelve times: One of the atmosphere stabilizer fins is hit, three
turrets are hit, sensors are struck, three fuel modules rupture, and engineering
is hit with the remaining three.
The corsair fleet changes course to stay roughly 15,000 miles from the gas giant
but is still on an intercept course.
The two squadrons are roughly 70,000 miles apart, still a difficult shot.
Pack of Daggers' squadron is 87,000 miles from Sitka's atmosphere.
With the damaged Sorrgheg not really engaged, Captain Tsuengsaekh
instructs the squadron to switch to the undamaged Sorrgheg.
While frigate lasers fire, the missiles burn for another minute. Surprisingly,
shifting fire to the undamaged Sorrgheg yielded a whole lot of misses.
There was one hit, just in front of the turret collar. Pack of Daggers'
shooting is also poor with only Uengghae hitting, dead on the nose and quite
likely damaging the sensor array.
And we know this because now both Sorrgheg reavers do not fire.
Apparently their electricians aren't used to working under pressure.
But the rest of the corsair squadron manages to hit the first frigate five
times. One hit forward near sensors, two late in the mid-section, and two more
in engineering.
The two squadrons are roughly 55,600 miles apart, fortunately still a difficult
shot. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 73,900 miles from Sitka's atmosphere.
For several scary minutes, the first frigate went dark, its power plant offline.
Although the power is back online. It doesn't fire any weapons this round.
The rest of the frigates notice an active sensor ping from the first
Sorrgheg, so Captain Tsuengsaekh wants the rest of the squadron to fire
at it. Six hits are scored. Two strike near the bridge. One incapacitates a
turret. One hits in the midsection. And the remaining two strike engineering.
Unfortunately, all of Pack of Daggers' gunners miss the mark.
The hits to the first Sorrgheg must've done something as, like its
comrade, it doesn't fire this round.
The corsair band is now firing on the second frigate. Fortunately, it is only
hit three times. One hit forward near sensors, one in late mid-section, and the
final one in engineering.
The two squadrons are roughly 45,000 miles apart, which is now an average
difficulty shot. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 60,820 miles from Sitka's
atmosphere.
The first frigate unleashes another volley of missiles and has them go full burn
for the entire time. It also fires all of its pulse laser turrets on the first
Sorrgheg. All three functioning laser turrets hit. One turret is hit. One
blow may have hit the bridge. But the best hit of all is in engineering.
The second frigate also unleashes a full volley of missiles and these, too, go
full burn. It fires all of its pulse laser turrets on the second
Sorrgheg. Four of six hit. One appears to have hit the bridge. The other
three strike engineering. One of those hits must've been the power plant for the
ship briefly went dark across the EM band.
The third frigate doesn't fire its missiles, sticking just with lasers. It
decides to target one of the Rrazaaghz. Five of six hit. Three hit up
front on the nose, forward of the first pair of turrets, while the other two
strike late amidship.
The fourth frigate doesn't fire any missiles either. It targets the same
Rrazaaghz. Five of six hit. One hits the nose. Another probably hit the
bridge. Two struck engineering.
Pack of Daggers opts to shoot at one of the Buccaneer class
vessels since Khigiikuli has to be on one of them. All four gunners hit.
Vincent's hit is on the nose. Uengghae hits amidship. Dougok and Simrii hit
engineering.
Neither Sorrgheg fires back, nor does the damaged Rrazaaghz or the
damaged Buccaneer. The remaining ships concentrate their fire on the
first frigate and hit it 18 times. There were hits in engineering, another
turret was knocked offline, and three more fuel modules were punctured. But the
bulk of the damage was to the ship's fins. The starboard and dorsal fins have
huge chunks missing. Should it survive to hit the gas giant, it will have
difficulty maneuvering in the atmosphere.
The two squadrons are roughly 32,500 miles apart, which is an average difficulty
shot. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 47,730 miles from Sitka's atmosphere.
With only two functioning laser turrets, the first frigate fires on the first
Sorrgheg. Its maneuver drive must be offline as it isn't attempting to
evade. Both shots hit their target in engineering: the power plant. The ship
goes dark across the EM band.
The second frigate targets the second Rrazaaghz. All six laser turrets
hit. One appears to have hit the bridge, two shots hit fuel modules, one hit
amidship, while two more hit engineering.
The third frigate also targets the second Rrazaaghz. Four of the six
laser turrets hit. Three shots hit amidship while the fourth hits engineering.
The fourth frigate also targets the second Rrazaaghz. All six laser
turrets hit. Four shots smack it dead on the nose. The other two hit engineering.
Since the first Buccaneer didn't fire back last round, Pack of
Daggers opts to shoot at the second one. Vincent hits the cargo hold. Simrii
hits near the bridge. Dougok hits amidship. Uengghae misses.
Neither Sorrgheg fires back, nor does the first damaged Rrazaaghz
or the first damaged Buccaneer. The remaining ships concentrate their
fire on the second frigate and hit it 20 times. There are several hits in
engineering, two laser turrets are knocked offline, and five fuel modules are
punctured. Sensors are also damaged.
The two squadrons are roughly 20,000 miles apart, which is still an average
difficulty shot. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 34,640 miles from Sitka's
atmosphere.
The twelve missiles fired from the first two frigates at 2:30 intercept the
corsair squadron. Six have targeted the first Sorrgheg. Apparently,
whatever damage that impeded its ability to fire has been repaired. Its
remaining turrets attempt anti-missile defensive fire. The missiles are too
swift and all six impact the ship. It's hard to get a read on their impact sites
but two of them were definitely in engineering. The ship explodes.
The other six have targeted the second Sorrgheg. Apparently, whatever
damage that impeded its ability to fire has been repaired. Its remaining turrets
attempt anti-missile defensive fire. Only one is successful. The other five
impact the ship. Two swoop in and strike its belly, rupturing fuel tanks there.
Another strikes engineering. One strikes a turret on the port side while the
other ruptures fuel tanks on the starboard side.
Shortly after that wave, the all-four-frigates volley of missiles impacts the
corsair fleet.
The first Rrazaaghz knocks out two missiles but four more get through.
One hits near the bridge while the other three hit engineering.
The second Rrazaaghz knocks out one missile, letting five get through. A
couple of fuel modules shatter. Another missile strikes amidship. The remaining
three strike engineering.
The first Aeogz doesn't hit any missiles. One missile rips its nose cone
nearly clear off. A few scraps of metal are holding it in place, but an
encounter with an atmosphere or hard acceleration will likely rip it right off.
One missile strikes near the bridge while two more hit amidship. Engineering
takes two hits.
The second Aeogz doesn't hit any missiles. Four missiles strike amidship
while the other two hit engineering.
The first frigate fires its two functioning laser turrets at the second
Sorrgheg. One turret successfully hits engineering.
The second frigate fires its four functioning laser turrets at the first
Rrazaaghz. All four hit. Two hit the nose. Four puncture fuel modules.
The third frigate fires on the second Rrazaaghz. Five out of six turrets
hit. One hits upon the nose and another goes amidship. The other three hit
engineering. Shortly thereafter the ship explodes.
The fourth frigate fires on the first Aeogz. Four of the six turrets hit.
All four are in engineering.
Pack of Daggers opens fire on the second Buccaneer. All four hit.
Vincent hits engineering while the other three hit amidship.
Since the surviving Sorrgheg and both Rrazaaghzes and
Aeogzes were busy with anti-missile fire, they do not get to fire on the
frigates. The first Buccaneer doesn't fire, but the rest do as do all of
the Ueknou.
The Buccaneers fire at the first frigate. It's hit eight times. Another
fuel module ruptures and there are a few hits amidship. There's a couple of hits
near the bridge. It's sensors must be offline as you're no longer detecting
active sensor pings.
The Ueknous fire at the second frigate. It's hit ten times. Four fuel
modules are hit and there are several amidships. Two hit engineering.
The two squadrons are roughly 11,250 miles apart, which is just outside of easy
range. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 21,550 miles from Sitka's atmosphere.
ETA to atmosphere is sixteen and a half minutes.
The first two frigates have begun decelerating at 1G. They're so badly banged up
that they need to kill as much atmospheric entry speed as possible. But 1G is
all they can do. Captain Tsuengsaekh understands their predicament, so orders
the rest of the group to match their decel burn for now so that the corsairs
don't suspect anything is up. Of course this means that the ETA will go up some.
The first frigate doesn't fire its weapons, but the second one does. It fires
its lasers at the first Rrazaaghz. Two of the four remaining turrets hit
engineering. Lights flicker and die across the ship.
The third frigate fires on the second Sorrgheg. All six laser turrets
strike as the ship is no longer evading enemy fire. Like the Rrazaaghz,
lights flicker across the ship and wink out.
The fourth frigate fires on the first Aeogz. All six laser turrets
strike as the ship is no longer evading enemy fire. There are several visible
explosions, and the ship can be seen to shudder. Seconds later the ship
explodes.
Pack of Daggers opens fire on the second Buccaneer. Vincent,
Simrii, and Dougok are successful. Vincent and Dougok strike engineering.
Simrii hits amidship.
The second Aeogz and all four Buccaneers fire on the first
frigate, striking it thirteen times. Five of those shots strike engineering.
The four Ueknou fire on the second frigate, striking it twelve times.
Five of those shots strike engineering. The maneuver drive sputters and
eventually conks out.
The two squadrons are roughly 11,875 miles apart, which is just outside of easy
range. Pack of Daggers' squadron is 10,000 miles from Sitka's atmosphere.
Captain Tsuengsaekh gives the order to increase decel burn to 2G. Obviously the
first two frigates are incapable.
The first frigate doesn't fire its weapons, but the second one does in a final
act of defiance. Aiming at the second Aeogz, three of its four remaining
laser turrets hit, and a full volley of missiles is on its way. One shot hit
midsection. The other two hit forward, possibly near sensors.
The third frigate fires on the first Buccaneer. Five of the six laser
turrets hit. A couple of fuel modules were struck as was the nose and
engineering three times.
The fourth frigate fires on the first Ueknou. Three of the six laser
turrets hit. Judging where the hit locations would correspond to on their ship,
it looks like the G-Carrier hangar, the forward staterooms, and the chief
engineer's cabin.
Pack of Daggers opens fire on the second Buccaneer. Vincent,
Simrii, and Uengghae hit. Vincent hits engineering while Simrii and Uengghae
hit amidship.
With a volley of missiles bearing down on it, the second Aeogz attempts
to knock them down. It succeeds in taking out one of them. The other five hit.
They all hit the front end of the ship rendering large holes in the hull.
The Buccaneers switch targets to the third frigate. They hit it thirteen
times. Four shots hit engineering and one turret is lost. The rest strike at
various places along the hull.
The Ueknou switch targets to the fourth frigate. They hit it ten times. A
turret is lost and a fuel module is punctured. There's one hit to engineering
while the rest strike at various places along the hull.
The second frigate is closest to Sitka's atmosphere at 2,820 miles and barreling
in at 52,360 mph. The first frigate is 3,900 miles away and has slowed to
39,270 mph. The rest of the group is 5,000 miles away and have slowed to 26,182
mph.
Captain Tsuengsaekh orders frigates three and four and Pack of Daggers
to stop decelerating when they reach 25,000 mph, a re-entry speed within
structural tolerances.
The two opposing squadrons are 15,000 to 17,200 miles apart, which is an average
difficulty shot.
The third frigate fires on the first Buccaneer. All six laser turrets
hit. One turret is gone. Two shots hit engineering. One fuel module was
ruptured, and the other two shots hit amidships.
The fourth frigate fires on the first Ueknou. Four of the five laser
turrets hit. Judging where the hit locations would correspond to on your ship,
it looks like the cargo hold was hit three times and the maneuver drive once.
Pack of Daggers opens fire on the second Buccaneer. Vincent,
Dougok, and Uengghae are successful. Vincent takes out a couple of fuel modules.
Dougok and Uengghae both hit engineering. Afterwards, the lights flicker and
go out.
The second frigate enters the atmosphere at 52,360 mph.
The Buccaneers, except for the second one, all fire on the third frigate.
They hit it seven times. Three shots hit engineering and one turret is lost.
The rest strike at various places along the hull.
The Ueknou all fire on the fourth frigate. They hit it ten times. Two
turrets are lost, and two fuel modules are punctured. There's one hit to
engineering while the rest strike at various places along the hull.
The first frigate enters the atmosphere at 30,100 mph.
The third and fourth frigates and Pack of Daggers enter the atmosphere.
The battle is over for now.
